Crews reopen SR 520 hours after Merritt Island gas leak

Crews in Brevard County spend hours remedying situation

MERRITT ISLAND, Fla. – Crews worked to fix a natural gas leak in Merritt Island on Monday night.

As of the 11 p.m. hour, officials were starting to reopen the area of State Road 520 between Sykes Creek Parkway and Plumosa Street in front of the Merritt Square Mall, officials said.

Some businesses nearby were forced to close early due to the situation.

The scene remained active for much of Monday night as workers spent hours trying to shut off the affected line and purge the remaining gas.

Brevard County Fire Rescue and Florida City Gas crews were on the case.

The incident was reported about 7 p.m. in the 700 block of East Merritt Island Causeway.

At last check, a hazmat team was called to the scene, but no evacuations were ever ordered. The leak was from a 4-inch line.

There's still no word on what caused the leak.
