TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The head of Florida's child welfare department will resign next month.
Department of Children and Families Secretary Mike Carroll sent a letter Friday to Gov. Rick Scott, saying he will leave office Sept. 6, four months before the next governor could have picked a replacement. Carroll has worked at the agency for 28 years and took over in 2014.

He did not say why he is leaving.
DCF has long been troubled. The Miami Herald earlier this year found 477 children have died since 2008 after their families came under DCF investigation. A Tampa Bay Times and Sarasota Herald-Tribune investigation in 2015 found that 15 patients had died and almost 1,000 had been hurt at the state's mental facilities.
