Woman walking in road struck by Volusia sheriff's cruiser, FHP says
21-year-old deputy placed on paid administrative leave
VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. – A deputy with the Volusia County Sheriff's Office struck a 38-year-old Ormond Beach woman who was walking in the middle of a road, the Florida Highway Patrol said.
Troopers said Amy Sojka was injured in the crash, which took place about 7:45 p.m. Tuesday in the 1900 block of Hand Avenue, not far from Chelsea Place Avenue, in the Ormond Beach area.
The FHP said Deputy Patrick Erlandson didn’t see Sojka before hitting her. He was not injured.
According to troopers, it’s not clear why Sojka was in the road.
The FHP said Wednesday that Sojka suffered a medical episode in an ambulance and was in critical condition. She was later upgraded to stable condition and is expected to recover from her injuries, troopers said.
Erlandson, who's been with the agency since 2017, was placed on administrative leave with pay, which is standard procedure in cases like this.
