Man doing yardwork fatally hit by driver under influence, troopers say

Driver had blood alcohol content of .169, report shows

VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. – A man working in his front yard in DeLand was fatally hit Friday afternoon by a driver suspected of DUI, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

The 83-year-old victim, identified as Donnie Meyers, was doing yardwork at 2150 Senic Avenue at 2:25 p.m. when he was fatally hit, according to the crash report.

Troopers said Bruno Torres, 29, of Pierson, who was driving a GMC pickup truck, turned north from Glenwood Road onto Senic Avenue, drove into the victim's front yard and ran him over.

Meyers died at the scene, troopers said.

Troopers said Torres took a breathalyzer test and blew a .169 percent. The legal limit is .08 percent.

Torres was arrested and charged with DUI manslaughter. At his first appearance Saturday morning, a judge set his bail at $51,000.

Neighbor Patty Clausen said Meyers always had a smile on his face when she would pass by his home.

"He's such a nice guy, and it's just so sad that someone who was drinking took his life," Clausen said. "When he is out here in his yard, he's, you can tell he's just a happy man. His neighbors are really going to miss him."

Clausen said it's concerning that troopers allege Torres was extremely intoxicated in the middle of the afternoon and operating a motor vehicle.

"He shouldn't even been behind a wheel," Clausen said. "Wherever he came from, if he was at a bar, wherever he came from, they should have taken his keys."

A family member told News 6 that Meyers has lived at the house with his sister and other family members for several years.
