Escaped inmate captured after stealing unmarked Sheriff's Office vehicle

Daniel Amoroso found in West Melbourne, deputies say

BREVARD COUNTY, Fla. – The escaped jail inmate accused of stealing a Brevard County Sheriff's Office car and fleeing to Orlando was captured overnight, deputies reported on Thanksgiving.

News 6 partner Florida Today reported that investigators said Daniel Amoroso, 58, of Deerfield Beach stole an unmarked 2009 Chevrolet Impala from the BCSO fleet maintenance facility on Camp Road in Cocoa. The car was a decommissioned patrol vehicle.

"He was located sometime early this morning at the Budget Inn in West Melbourne off of 192," said Tod Goodyear, sheriff's office spokesman.

"Our GAMEOVER unit had been investigating friends, any possible associates, and gathered some information that led them to believe that he was at that hotel," Goodyear said.

Amoroso faces charges of escape and grand theft motor vehicle. He was scheduled to make his initial court appearance at 9 a.m. on Thanksgiving from the Brevard County Jail Complex.

Deputies said Amoroso stole the Impala about 9:30 p.m. Tuesday. The car was located early Wednesday morning at an apartment complex off Orange Blossom Trail, Goodyear said.

Amoroso had been jailed since July 25 on a felony failure to appear warrant on a charge of grand theft. Police said he attempted to steal merchandise valued at $2,390 by concealing it inside a motorized scooter at Bass Pro Shops in Palm Bay.

Goodyear did not know why Amoroso would have left the stolen sheriff's car in Orlando, then returned to West Melbourne.
