Body is likely missing Florida woman, Costa Rican officials say

SAN JOSE, Costa Rica – Authorities in Costa Rica say they think that a body discovered near an apartment in the capital of San Jose is that of missing Florida woman Carla Stefaniak, who disappeared while vacationing in the Central American nation.

Stefaniak was reported missing on Nov. 27.

The body, covered in plastic bags, was found about 300 meters from the apartment that Stefaniak was staying at in San Jose where the Hallandale Beach woman was staying. But officials add that they are awaiting fingerprint comparisons to 100 percent confirm the identity.

Costa Rican authorities said the victim was stabbed to death.

Police in Costa Rica said someone has been detained in connection with Stefaniak’s disappearance, CBS Miami reports.

According to relatives, Stefaniak was celebrating her 36th birthday in Costa Rica.

The U.S. Embassy in Costa Rica and the FBI are also assisting with the case, her family said. U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., has also offered to help the family.
