HOLLYWOOD, Fla. – A jewelry store owner in Hollywood was captured on surveillance video fighting off a would-be robber.
The attempted robbery was reported around 2:30 p.m. March 2 at DSH Oakwood Jewelers at 2897 Stirling Road, according to News 6 sister station WPLG.
"He came over here and he say, 'I purchase two chains two or three months ago and it's broken.' I say, 'No problem. I have a jeweler over here. We'll fix it for you -- no charge,'" owner Daniel Setton said.
But Setton, 74, told Local 10 News reporter Ian Margol that the man demanded a new one and got upset when Setton told him, "No."
According to Hollywood police Officer Christian Lata, the man then walked to a restricted area where gold chains are kept.
The video shows Setton cutting the man off and a physical altercation ensued.
"I ran that way and I pushed him from the chains back -- all of the way back -- and we had a fist fight," Setton said.
The owner and the man are seen in the video exchanging punches while another person appears to try to hit the man over the head with something.
Lata said the would-be thief left in a gray Honda.
"I'm sorry that happened," Setton said. "I'm not here, 74 years old, to start fighting, but if you have to, you have to, you know?"
Setton said a different thief targeted his store just a couple weeks ago on Feb. 19.
In that case, a man walked in and asked to look at several items.
But as soon as the clerk sat the display case on the counter, the robber snatched it and took off with about $100,000 in jewelry..
He fled in a golden Lexus, driven by an accomplice
Anyone with information about the either man's identity is asked to call the Hollywood Police Department at 954-764-4357 or Broward Crime Stoppers at 954-493-8477.
