2 killed in Bartow mobile home fire

Deputies launch death investigation on Fighter Road

BARTOW, Fla. – A man and woman were killed Friday in a mobile home fire in Polk County, deputies said.

The Polk County Sheriff's Office said Joan M. Koch, 81, and Bernard Samuel Johns, 72, died in the fire, which was reported around 4 a.m. in Bartow.

A 50-year-old man who also rented a room in the home ran outside when he smelled smoke. He was uninjured.

The three people who lived in the mobile home are not related to each other.

Autopsies will be conducted to determine each victim's exact cause of death.

The state fire marshal will investigate the cause of the fire.
