DeLAND, Fla. – A 72-year-old DeLand man was arrested on allegations of stabbing his nephew because he was taking too much time in the bathroom, police said.

Dan Johnson was arrested Tuesday on charges of aggravated battery. He was taken to the Volusia County Branch Jail and is being held without bond.

According to DeLand police, officers and Volusia County sheriff's deputies were called to the 500 block of East Beresford Avenue after a 29-year-old man reported that he had been stabbed several times and the assailant was still in the house.

Officials said they found the victim with stab wounds to his abdomen and lower back. He was airlifted to Halifax Health Medical Center in Daytona Beach and is expected to survive, police said.

According to police, Johnson stabbed his nephew after they got into an apparent dispute about how much time the victim had spent in the bathroom.

Detectives said Johnson knocked on the bathroom door twice and told his nephew to get out. The nephew opened the door and said he had only been in there for a short time and Johnson stabbed him for being "disrespectful," police said.

Johnson also claimed that his nephew had puffed out his chest at him, which he viewed as a threat to his life, police said. Detectives, however, could not find evidence that the nephew attempted to attack or verbally threaten his uncle.
