Toddler dies in apparent drowning incident in Volusia County

18-month-old was found in the pond by his mother

VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. – The Volusia County Sheriff's Office said an 18-month-old boy died in an apparent drowning incident Tuesday.

Investigators said deputies responded to the call on the 4000 block of Cresthill Lane around 6:17 p.m.

Deputies said Levi Thomas' mother found him in a pond and performed CPR until first responders arrived at the scene.

The sheriff's office said the initial investigation shows Levi left the house through a dog door while his mom was briefly out of the room.

When the mom returned she realized he was missing and searched around the house for him until she found him in the pond, according to the sheriff's office.

The pond is surrounded by sloping ground.

"Please keep this hurting family in your prayers tonight as they grieve a loss that most of us cannot imagine," Sheriff Mike Chitwood said in a statement.
