DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – A Volusia County sheriff's deputy who was killed in a crash was remembered at a service Thursday.
A celebration of life ceremony was held Thursday morning for Senior Deputy Frank Scofield.
The ceremony took place at First Baptist Church in Daytona Beach. Local law enforcement officers and family members spoke at the memorial, whose central theme was, "Frank led a good life."
The room was decorated with flowers and pictures of the fallen deputy.
Volusia County Sheriff Michael Chitwood spoke about his colleague saying, “If you were running down a dark alley chasing a man you wanted Frank Scofield by your side.”
The sheriff also mentioned that Wednesday June 6, would now be known as Senior Deputy Chief Scofield Day.
With tears in his eyes and a shaky voice, the sheriff offered one final goodbye to his friend saying:
“Until we meet again, keep an eye on everyone. Goodbye.”
Later in the memorial service Scofield's son went up to the podium and spoke of the things he was going to miss most about his father.
He said that he was going to miss the loving text messages that his father would send to both him and his mother.
As he wiped tears from his eyes, he ended his eulogy by saying, “I’m definitely going to miss him.”
Scofield was known to be an avid hunter. His nephew told stories about the hunts they would go on all over the country.
Scofield had completed the grand slam of turkey hunts, which a person harvests the four most common species of the American turkey.
Scofield achieved this milestone on his 58th birthday. His nephew was set to complete the grand slam this year.
“My biggest regret is not being able to complete that journey with Frank,” his nephew said.
Officials said Scofield, 58, was killed Saturday when a driver ran a stop sign and hit him while he was off duty, riding his bike along Tomoka Farms Road near Pioneer Trail in Volusia County.
Scofield had been with the Volusia County Sheriff's Office since 1995 and served mostly in the marine unit.
Investigators said the driver who hit him is facing charges.
