Melbourne renames road to Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard
Supporters want to change Airport Boulevard to Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard
MELBOURNE, Fla. – On Tuesday night Melbourne City Council voted to rename Airport Boulevard to Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard.
The ordinance goes into effect immediately.
Before the meeting critics said the name change would cost too much.
The road stretches for 1.7 miles between U.S. 192 and Apollo Boulevard and goes past Orlando Melbourne International Airport.
The name change has been in the works for 30 years.
It took city council two hours to reach the decision on Tuesday.
City leaders will announce on Wednesday when the new street signs will be installed.
