7 detained after standoff at Orlando motel on International Drive

SWAT team called to EconoLodge

ORLANDO, Fla. - Seven people, including juveniles, were detained and questioned Thursday morning after a man suspected in an armed robbery barricaded himself inside an Orlando motel located in the tourist district of the city.

Debonaire Brooks, 17, was arrested after the standoff, which took place at the EconoLodge motel near the Travelodge on International Drive near Sand Lake Road.

The six others who were questioned included one adult and several juveniles from Polk County, said deputies, who are trying to figure out why they were at the motel room.

"One of them was renting the room with their ID, so we know him," said Jeff Williams of the Orange County Sheriff's Office. "We're talking to schools, parents and to a number of people to determine who they are and what their involvement was in this robbery."

Orange County sheriff's deputies said they were called to the area overnight after a robbery was reported nearby.  Deputies said a man, later identified as Brooks, tried to rob a couple in a car at gunpoint, but the man in the car somehow wrestled the gun from Brooks and shot at him.

Brooks then fled to the EconoLodge and entered a room where the others were inside, deputies said.

A SWAT team was called to the motel, which was evacuated, and all seven people inside the room later surrendered, deputies said.

Deputies are reviewing surveillance video at nearby businesses to gather information and to see if the attempted robbery was caught on camera.

No injuries were reported.
