Mom shot, killed while kids inside home, police say

COCOA, Fla. - The 911 calls were released on Tuesday in the shooting that killed one woman and seriously injured another at a Cocoa home, where at least three children were also staying, police said.

The double-shooting occurred Monday afternoon in the 1500 block of Clearlake Road, across from Brevard Community College's Cocoa campus.

Cocoa police say the small children, all estimated to be under 7 years old ran to a neighbor's house and the neighbor called 911. Family members tell Local 6 the women were gunned down before a birthday celebration.

When Cocoa police arrived, they discovered 24-year-old Lydia Bradford, who police say is mother to three of the children, dead inside of the home.

"[She would] watch the children for me when I go to the grocery store, help me clean up my house," said relative Mary Neely. " I'm just going to miss her so much."

Bradford's mother, Equaller Marie Bradford, 58, was airlifted to a hospital in critical condition with at least five gunshot wounds to her head and upper body. Family members told Local 6 she is now stable.

Police believe the victims may have been targeted and are searching for the shooter. A gun was found nearby, but no sign of the shooter, according to police.

The Department of Children and Families has taken custody of the children, officials said, while they identify their family members.

Neighbors told Local 6 they were shocked at the shooting.

"It's uncalled for," said neighbor Jacqueline Satterthwaite. "It's supposed to be a day of celebration- it's Martin Luther King Day, then you have the President's Inauguration and something like this happens."
