ORLANDO, Fla. – An Orange County circuit judge Thursday increased the bond amount for the man accused of creating an hours-long standoff at the Orlando International Airport this week.
Michael Pettigrew, 26, faces one count of aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer for allegedly pointing a weapon at an Orlando police officer.
The judge said Pettigrew's bond should have originally been set at $5,000 for the charge, but jail records show it was set at $2,500.
Pettigrew was soft-spoken and polite during the first appearance, where he said he is unemployed and lives with his parents. He has lived in Central Florida for about 16 years.
"I’m just a student at Valencia, obviously not anymore after this," he told the judge.
Pettigrew's public defender argued against increasing the bond, because his parent's will likely be the ones to pay it.
Before leaving the court he said, "Sorry" to his public defender.
The judge ordered his bond increased to $7,500 citing his lack of ties to the community and previous criminal history. Pettigrew was discharged from the U.S. Marine Corps in 2012 after stabbing a corporal with a knife, documents show.
The judge also ordered Pettigrew not return to the airport, have contact with anyone from Mears transportation, any witnesses and not to have any weapons in his possession.
Pettigrew could post his bond Thursday if the Orange County Jail clears his holds, including a DNA sample and finger printing.
