Animal cruelty charge reviewed in hot car death of K-9

SEBASTIAN, Fla. – The State Attorney's Office is reviewing whether to charge a Sebastian police officer with animal cruelty for the death of his K-9 partner, officials announced Tuesday.

Melbourne police submitted the charge to the State Attorney's Office after the dog, Diesel, was found dead in the officer's car in Melbourne on April 28. Detectives completed their investigation and submitted the case to prosecutors for review, News 6 partner Florida Today reported.

Neither agency has released the name of the handler.

Diesel may have been inside the car for several hours that afternoon. Authorities have not said the cause of the dog's death.
