Apopka police investigate apartment shooting, car fire

Police ID victim as Dexter Hughley

APOPKA, Fla. – An Apopka man continues to fight for his life after he was shot and his car was set on fire.

Apopka police said they responded around 10 p.m. Wednesday to a car on fire, then received a call early Thursday about a shooting at the Orange North Apartments, a few miles away on Orange Blossom Trail.

Apopka police said Friday that Dexter Hughley was injured in the shooting and his car was found ablaze on Fifth Street.

"It's a shock to see. It's a shock to see. It really is," said Willa Mae Acres, a friend of the Hughley family. "He really is a good person. He comes from a good family. He didn't bother nobody."

Acres said residents of the complex have never seen a similar crime, adding that the area is not known for crime.

Acres said she has no idea who would want to hurt him.

"He had a nice car. They might have took him for the car, might have thought he had money, something like that," Acres said.

Detectives continue to work on identifying the shooter.

Anyone with information about the cases can call Crimeline at 800-423-TIPS.
