Bank customer discovers skimmer while using ATM in Kissimmee

Discovery made at SunTrust Bank on Main Street near US 192

KISSIMMEE, Fla. – A bank customer said he found a skimmer while using an ATM in Kissimmee.

The customer made the discovery during a trip to the SunTrust Bank on Main Street near U.S. 192.

"It wasn't secure. It wasn't federally secure, like I would expect a bank's ATM swipe area to be," Mike Taaffe said.

Taaffe said he was about to withdraw money when he decided to wiggle the machine first. To his surprise, he said, a skimmer came right off the SunTrust ATM.

"I ended up grabbing the thing and pulling it down a little bit, and it made a suction noise, like that, and then I heard it and I thought it was odd, so I shimmied it a little bit more and then it finally broke loose," Taaffe said.

It left what he said is a green skimmer sleeve in his hand -- a spitting image of the original on the machine. That's when, he said, he ran inside and told bank employees.

"I hollered, 'Look at what I found,' and startled quite a bit of the tellers and the management, and they all came out and said, 'What happened? What happened?' and I said, 'I found a skimmer on your device, on your ATM,'" Taaffe said.

He was so stunned he actually found the skimmer, he took to Facebook to warn others and has advice for all card users.

"Be vigilant. Don't be scared. Go ahead and shake your ATM. Check it out. Look over your shoulder. Use the teller. Just be vigilant," he said.

News 6 called the SunTrust Corporate Office, which said it is aware of the situation and is working with police on this case. The office said that no customer information was compromised.
