MELBOURNE, Fla. – Melbourne police are conducting a death investigation after a passerby found a badly decomposed body Sunday in a heavily wooded industrial location typically used by the area’s homeless community as a camping ground.
Police believe the body -- found hanging from a tree -- may have been in the same location near an old Pepsi-Cola bottling plant off of 3951 Sarno Road either just before or right after Hurricane Irma’s passage through the area.

“It’s a death investigation and it’s probably been out here for a while. We believe it may be a suicide, but we have detectives out at the scene right now. We have to make sure,” Melbourne police Lt. Steve Sadoff told News 6 partner Florida Today.
“We got a call earlier with someone saying they found a body,” said Sadoff, adding that police could not readily determine if the remains belonged to a man or woman. An investigation is ongoing.
