PALM BAY, Fla. - Palm Bay police are investigating after a 12-year-old boy in a foster home was killed in what police call a "tragic, freak accident."

Police said they were called to a home on Meadowbrook Road just after 6 p.m. Sunday for a child not breathing.

The investigation found that the boy was in the backyard playing on rope-style swings, one with a wooden bench and the other described as a "Tarzan-style" rope swing with an open loop at the bottom, according to the report.

Police said the boy appeared to have gotten wrapped up in the open loop of the second swing and was asphyxiated.

The boy was airlifted to a hospital and died at 7:12 p.m.

Police said three other foster children that were also living at the home were relocated.

The Department of Children and Families is also investigating.

It's not clear if criminal charges will be filed. The investigation is ongoing.
