Boy, 3, drowns in Cocoa backyard swimming pool, cops say

Police believe boy fell into pool during family gathering at home

COCOA, Fla. – A 3-year-old boy drowned in a backyard swimming pool during a family party Saturday, Cocoa police said.

Dispatchers received a call before 5:30 p.m. in the 2100 block of Ivy Drive.

Police said there was a family gathering at the home where several children ranging in ages from 8 to 10 years old were playing in the swimming pool.

An adult was outside grilling food and most of the other adults were inside the home, police said.

It is believed the 3-year old boy fell into the pool and was in the water for two minutes before he was seen. Police said an adult pulled him out and began CPR.

The boy was taken to Wuesthoff Hospital in Rockledge, where he was pronounced dead at 6:23 p.m., police said.

Detectives determined the incident was an accidental drowning.
