Brevard Zoo releases sea turtle found with 30 pieces of plastic in stomach

Humbug found in Sebastian Inlet

MELBOURNE, Fla. – The Brevard Zoo released a loggerhead sea turtle, named Humbug, back into the ocean on Wednesday afternoon.

Humbug was brought to the Brevard Zoo healing center after she was seen floating in the Sebastian Inlet.

At the center, Humbug passed 30 pieces of plastic that had been inside of her stomach. Many were pieces of garbage or grocery bags. To help get rid of her plastic intake, Humbug was given antibiotics, fluids and plenty of rest.

The Brevard Zoo staff said while Humbug was lucky she was able to pass plastic, many other sea turtles cannot. According to the Sea Turtle Conservancy, 100 million marine animals die every year because of plastic intake.

Our Sea Turtle Healing Center has done it again! Humbug swallowed 30 pieces of plastic and now she's back in the ocean. See her story here: bit.ly/2pakefd
