Can you help solve DeLand cold case that led to man's death?

Carl Husfeld died one year ago this month after intruder came to his home

DeLAND, Fla. – One year ago this month, 87-year-old Carl Husfeld was in his DeLand home when an intruder tried to force his or her way inside, deputies said.

Husfeld went to check on the situation and he was hit in the face with the door, according to detectives with the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office.

“(He) fractures his face, fractures his skull (and) the bad guy takes off,” Sheriff Mike Chitwood said. “We don't get much information on him (other) than (that he’s) a possible Hispanic male.”

In listening to the 911 call, one can hear the panic in Husfeld’s voice.

“I opened the door to see who was trying to get into the house, and then the door hit me,” Husfeld is heard saying. “He slammed the door in my face.”

A police dispatcher asks, “When did this happen?”

“I'm bleeding,” Husfeld said. “I'm bleeding!"

Deputies said Husfeld was rushed to a hospital and died from his injuries two weeks later.

On Monday night, Chitwood said he believes the intruder must have told someone what happened. And he wants anyone in the community with answers to come forward.

“Somebody out there knows,” Chitwood said. “And if you know it, do the right thing. Do the right thing (and) get $10,000 out of it, and you help solve this murder, give closure to this family and get this guy off the street.”

This is considered a cold case.

“You want to solve every single murder and you're only as good as information that we get -- and in a case like this, there's very little physical evidence,” Chitwood said.
