Caretaker accused of shaking, critically injuring baby

ORLANDO, Fla. – A 25-year-old woman was arrested Wednesday in Orange County on allegations of shaking a 1-year-old baby so severely that the child needed emergency brain surgery.

Orlando police said Amenah Taggart, the child's caretaker, was arrested on charges of aggravated battery with great bodily harm, neglect of a child with great bodily harm and aggravated child abuse.

According to an arrest affidavit, the child was taken to Arnold Palmer Hospital and underwent surgery.

A pediatric neurosurgeon said the child suffered a brain hemorrhage and bleeding behind her eye, according to the affidavit.

The doctor said the child's injuries were consistent with a rapid back-and-forth motion to the head, according to police.

The child remains in critical condition.

Taggart, whose address was listed as Philadelphia, was arrested and booked into the Orange County Jail.
