Casey Anthony's former lawyer accused of trying to smuggle 3,300 pounds of cocaine

Todd Macaluso planned to bring drugs into U.S., reports say

A California lawyer who represented Casey Anthony in her murder case before he was disbarred is accused of trying to smuggle 3,300 pounds of cocaine into the country, the Orlando Sentinel reports.

Todd Macaluso conspired with two co-defendants to fly a corporate jet from Haiti to Ecuador, where it would be loaded with thousands of pounds of cocaine before taking off to Honduras, and eventually the drugs would be distributed in the U.S., the newspaper reports. He had just flown to Port-au-Prince from Orlando when he had the conversation with the co-defendants on Nov. 14, the same day authorities in Haiti arrested him.

Macaluso worked on Anthony's case, but withdrew before it went to trail when the California Bar Association accused him of misappropriating $150,000. He was sentenced to five months in federal prison in 2015 for forging the signatures of his personal injury clients so he could obtain millions of dollars from investors by using their cases as collateral, according to NBC San Diego.

He was also ordered to pay a $100,000 fine and $150,000 in restitution payments.

An Orlando jury acquitted Anthony of murder in the death of her 2-year-old daughter, Caylee Anthony, in 2011.
