COCOA BEACH, Fla. - Children found a human skull while spearfishing in the Banana River near Cocoa Beach, and authorities are trying to determine the dead person's identity.

The discovery was reported about 7:30 p.m. Saturday in the Sunnyland area between Cocoa Beach and Patrick Air Force Base.

The kids stumbled upon the skull, which was missing its jawbone, in about 2 feet of water roughly 15 feet offshore, Brevard County sheriff's Maj. John Mellick said.

The sheriff's dive team conducted a "grid search" of the site Sunday morning for about 90 minutes, but found no other clues, Mellick said.

The skull has been turned over to the Brevard County Medical Examiner's Office for further investigation.
