Controlled burn sparks 450-acre brush fire in Volusia County

State Road 40 reopens in area

PIERSON, Fla. - Firefighters on Tuesday contained a 450-acre brush fire in Volusia County that sparked from a controlled burn.

Volusia County deputies said the brush fire ignited Monday west of U.S. Highway 17 and south of State Road 40.  The fire jumped S.R. 40 just after 3 p.m., and the roadway was closed from Emporia Road to County Road 3 until 8:15 a.m. Tuesday.

A prescribed burn that was being conducted south of S.R. 40 and west of U.S. 17 earlier Monday escaped the containment lines and headed north-northeast, according to Volusia County officials.

"From what we've seen lately, this one is a pretty good size," Battalion Commander John Pasqualle said.

Six homes on Byrd and Jericho roads were evacuated as a result of the fire, Volusia County Fire Rescue said. The evacuation order was later retracted and families were allowed to return to their homes hours later.

"It's scary like you said ..but what can I do," Ricardo Vela, who lives in the area, said.

Officials said S.R. 40 may be closed Tuesday night if visibility is poor in the area.

No injuries have been reported.
