Deltona man dies after reported accidental shooting

Volusia County Deputies say he may have been hit by a stray bullet

DELTONA, Fla. -- A 69-year-old Deltona man is dead after he was struck, possibly by a stray bullet, while standing in his yard, according to Volusia County Deputies.

Deputies identified the victim as Bruce Fleming.

"He was like a father to us local boys. Any problems we had he would help us out," said Robert Reynolds, a family friend.

Reynolds said Fleming was a landscaper who supported his family with his own business.

Authorities responded to the scene at 3220 Cadehill Drive just after 10 a.m.

According to officials, the man was shot in the chest. He was rushed to Florida Hospital Fish Memorial in Orange City, where he was pronounced dead.

The man who may have shot him was interviewed by detectives for hours.

Witnesses tell Local 6 the property behind the deceased man's home contains woods and an area where the owners regularly fire guns. Deputies originally called it a shooting range, but now say there is no shooting range on the property.

The believe the man was shooting a gun out in the open on the lot next to the victim's house.

Investigators say the shooting appears accidental, but investigators are trying to find out if any criminal charges are appropriate.
