DeLand woman accused in fatal hit-and-run commits suicide

14-year-old girl killed in March crash in March

DeLAND, Fla. - A Central Florida woman who was arrested in a hit-and-run crash that killed one teen and injured another apparently committed suicide.

Volusia County sheriff's deputies found 50-year-old Danielle Halverson dead in her bedroom Monday after a friend got worried when he couldn't reach her. He called the sheriff's office, reporting that Halverson had been depressed lately and had spoken of suicide.

Investigators say Halverson left a suicide note.

She was arrested in October and charged with leaving the scene of a March 17 crash that killed 14-year-old Juliana Taylor Hobbs. She was also charged with tampering with evidence.

Records show she told deputies the crash might have happened when she reached for her cellphone.

An autopsy and toxicology tests will determine how Halverson died.
