Deputies: Woman carrying twins fatally shot by husband

Orange County Sheriff's deputies say 1 baby survived

ORLANDO, Fla. - Orange County deputies have arrested a man accused of fatally shooting his wife, who was carrying twins -- one of whom survived.

Michael Boyce, 33, was arrested in the shooting, which happened around 5 p.m. Thursday at Ashley Place Apartments near Pershing Avenue in Orlando.

According to the Orange County Sheriff's Office, it was initially thought that the incident was a suicide.  After investigating, however, officials said Boyce shot his wife, 23-year-old Alexis Boyce, in the head, killing her.

Authorities said Alexis lived in the apartment with her husband and both of her parents. The parents were in their bedroom they heard the gunshot, deputies said.

Michael Boyce initially told deputies that Alexis had shot herself. He said Alexis said she was depressed and asked to see Michael's handgun. It wasn't until he gave contradictory statements about what hand the gun was in and also confronted with evidence at the scene that he told detectives he shot his wife in the head.

Alexis Boyce, who was 8-months pregnant with twin boys, was pronounced dead at Orlando Regional Medical Center.  One of the babies died, but the other was in the neonatal intensive care unit at Winnie Palmer Hospital. Michael Boyce is a former military police officer and currently works as an armed security guard, and he still hasn't provided any explanation as to why he shot his wife.

"I'm a grandparent," neighbor Hector Ruiz said. "It is devastating to come outside and hear someone got shot and rushed to the hospital. With twins involved, one is in intensive care, it breaks my heart."
