WINTER PARK, Fla. - A court hearing was canceled Monday for a man accused of causing a fatal crash at a Winter Park day care last month.

Robert Corchado, 28, was arrested on charges of fleeing the scene of a fatal crash in the April 9 wreck at the KinderCare Learning Center on Goldenrod Road.

The Orange County State Attorney's Office confirmed that the Monday hearing was canceled but provided no further details.  Corchado's attorney, Daniel Tumarkin, said the hearing was canceled because his client faces a new charge of trafficking heroin.

Tumarkin said that he will investigating the new charges and the state has 15 days to provide him with their evidence.

Florida Highway Patrol troopers tell Local 6 they found cocaine and heroine in the SUV he abandoned the day of the deadly daycare crash.

Local 6 legal analyst Luis Calderon said the state will most likely argue that Corchado left the scene of the crash because he had heroin and cocaine in his SUV.

"That he didn't want to wait for police to come and possibly search the vehicle, but arguments can be made that we don't know when the drugs even came to play in this vehicle, or whether he was even aware of the fact that they were in the truck," Calderon said.

At the court appearance, known as a Nebbia hearing, Corchado was to prove to a judge that any bail money he comes up with is from a legitimate source, not illegal activity.

Calderon said Corchado's drug charges are a "significant blow to his ability to bond out."

Authorities said Corchado struck the back of a Toyota Solara, pushing that car into the day care center and killing 4-year-old Lily Quintus. More than a dozen others were injured in the crash.

Officials said Corchado fled the scene and later turned himself in after the crash prompted a statewide manhunt. He was booked into the Orange County jail on $100,000 bond.
