VIERA, Fla. - Brevard Public Schools said half days every Wednesday make students dual enrolled at Eastern Florida State College miss their high school courses while they're in a college classroom.
A spokesman for Brevard Schools told News 6 Thursday if half days were moved to Friday, the problem would be fixed.
"What we want to do is align the school district schedule with Eastern Florida, which is closed on Friday, so that the kids who are dual enrolled get to go to all their classes," said Matt Reed, with BPS.
Reed said moving early-release days from Wednesday to Friday would also help teachers get their weekend work done early and reduce student absences.
Reed said some families who are not working Friday may pull their kids out of class for vacations.
"We think this will help everybody," Reed said.
A 2016 Viera High School graduate and current Eastern Florida State College told News 6 she feels it's best to keep early dismissal days on Wednesday.
Arielle Fox said when she was in high school, she enjoyed getting a break in her week.
"You get more time to get your work done," Fox told News 6. "Friday, it's already the weekend so you're pretty much done with all your homework."
The district has begun talks with the teacher's union and if an agreement can be reached, it will go to the school board for approval.
Leaders are scheduled to meet again at a bargaining hearing on June 19.
