Early 'Black Friday' sales get local backlash

Central Florida workers sound off on earlier shopping hours

ORLANDO, Fla. - While many Central Florida shoppers rejoice over stores opening on Thanksgiving Day for Black Friday doorbuster sales, the employees at the stores say they're less than impressed.

This Thanksgiving, Walmart will open at 8 p.m. and Target at 9 p.m. Thursday. Walmart workers have threatened to go on strike and more than 200,000 people have filed an online petition asking Target to rethink.

"I mean everybody wants to be home and enjoy the full day with their family without having to think about going into work after eating turkey," said Carol Mahanes, who is working on Thanksgiving this year for the first time ever.

Despite the backlash against the stores opening early, she believes she'll be working on Thanksgiving from now on.

"You know, I would just as soon be at home relaxing but you've got to do what you've got to do, jobs are hard to come by," Mahanes said.
