Fire damages Huey Magoo's near UCF

Cause of blaze not known

OVIEDO, Fla. - A fire broke out at Huey Magoo's in Oviedo early Wednesday, badly damaging the restaurant.

A fire official told Local 6 that a shopper at a nearby 7-Eleven spotted smoke coming from the restaurant, at 4293 Alafaya Trail near the University of Central Florida, and called authorities.

Firefighters extinguished the blaze, but at least 25 percent of the restaurant was charred, according to officials.

"Disbelief.  You never expect the call that your business is burning and is on fire," said co-owner Matt Armstrong, who helped build the restaurant from the ground up in 2004.

The fire was contained to mostly the kitchen area, but smoke damaged Varsity Nails, a next-door business that shares a wall with the restaurant.

The cause of the fire is not known.

Armstrong said he is glad things didn't turn out worse.

"We're looking forward to getting back open and .... be part of this community long term," he said. "We're gonna get through this. We've faced a lot of challenges in this life and it's how you respond to that."

It's not clear when the restaurant will reopen. Customers can visit the Huey Magoo's Winter Springs location in the meantime.
