Florida Turnpike reopens in Osceola County

Florida Highway Patrol investigates crash

ST. CLOUD, Fla. - A tandem tractor-trailer hauling batteries crashed into a pickup truck on the Florida Turnpike on Tuesday, forcing officials to close the roadway for hours.

Southbound lanes of the Turnpike were closed for several hours between U.S. 192 and the Canoe Creek Service Plaza before reopening around 9:15 a.m.  Motorists were forced to exit at mile marker 242.

According to officials, the pickup was towing another pickup but the lights on the truck being towed were not working properly.  The driver of the big rig didn't see the pickup and crashed into the rear of the vehicle, officials said.

One of the trailers overturned, spilling forklift batteries, officials said.

Both drivers were taken to hospital with minor injuries.  A passenger in the pickup was not injured.

The crash remains under investigation, and the driver of the pickup could face charges, officials said.
