Brevard County Libraries pull popular book 'Fifty Shades Of Grey'

Book too graphic for shelves, library officials say

Brevard County – Some consider E.L. James' "Fifty Shades Of Grey" to be soft pornography, others are calling it 'mommy porn.' So why is it so popular among women?

Brevard County Library officials said they purchased 19 copies of the book because of its popularity, but after seeing reviews they decided to pull it off their shelves.

"It's a shame. It's freedom of speech and there is nothing horrible about this book," said resident Doreen Sley.

Shannon Ramsey agreed.

"I'm intrigued and ready to read it with my husband," Ramsey said.

Others who have read the provocative novel disagree and because of those bad reviews Brevard County libraries pulled the first of the popular trilogy earlier this week saying it doesn't meet their selection criteria.

Don Walker, a spokesman for Brevard County said reviews considered the book to be pornographic in nature and they don't collect porn.

"I think we should have access to these books regardless of whether other people like them or not." Patricia McCarron said.

"It's a little saucy and most of us moms who have kids in school don't have a real life like that," Doreen Sley said.

Sley is a fan of the book which is topping bestseller lists across the country.

"I have all three books on my book shelf hidden behind other books ... I would recommend it, but a lot of my friends would not read it," Sley said.

The book is more than a romance novel with graphic descriptions of sadomasochism.

Sley admits while she's a fan she wouldn't want her daughter or even her mother reading "Fifty Shades."

"Oh no! She would be mortified if she knew I was reading it," Sley said.

While you can't check out the naughty novel at Brevard County libraries, you can at Volusia County libraries. However Orange County libraries don't stock the book.
