PALM BAY, Fla. - A SWAT team took a father into custody after a seven hour standoff, the Palm Bay Police Department says

Earl Stanton, 41, was armed with a rifle and wouldn't let his kids leave the house on Joshua Drive in the Vista Oaks community, investigators said.

Neighbors told police that Stanton was firing his gun out of the window and screaming, authorities said.

A neighbor called 911 around 4:35 a.m. to report the incident, police said. That neighbor said he heard gunshots.

Neighbors in the immediate area were being told to stay inside.

Crisis negotiators said they made several attempts to contact Stanton by cell phone and PA announcements, but there had been no response from inside the home.

Stanton eventually surrendered. He now faces several charges.

Police said they don't know what set him off.

Stanton's two children weren't hurt, and are reportedly staying with a family friend.
