Lightning blamed for beach injury, house fire

Man on Cocoa Beach hurt; Longwood home burns

COCOA BEACH, Fla. – Brevard County fire rescue officials said a man was injured Wednesday afternoon in a lightning strike on Cocoa Beach.

The man was hurt near the Doubletree Oceanfront Hotel around 4 p.m. Wednesday. It's not clear if he was directly struck by the lightning.

Fire rescue officials said the man was conscious and taken to Cape Canaveral hospital with minor injuries.

No other information was released.

Later on Wednesday, lightning was blamed for igniting a house fire in Longwood.  Firefighters think a home on Rangeline Woods Cove, between State Road 434 and E.E. Williamson Road.

Flames were reported coming through the roof and a firefighter was injured, but not seriously. No one else was hurt.
