MELBOURNE, Fla. – They've already brought in more than a million dollars on the space coast alone. Now, red light cameras could soon get the green light in Melbourne.
The two intersections that will be using the red light cameras are U.S. 1 and Eau Gallie Boulevard and U.S. 1 and Strawbridge Avenue. The intersections have high amounts of crash data and are known to produce a large volume of traffic.
"I don't think it's a bad idea. People do run red lights pretty often around here," said Melbourne resident John Edwards said.
In just 15 minutes, Local 6 spotted caught three different people running a red light at the intersection of Strawbridge Avenue and U.S. 1.
Sargent Marty Miller with the Melbourne Police Department believes that these cameras will not only catch red light runners, but they will also serve as a deterrent.
"Once those cameras are in place it will actually slow down the traffic and that's what we want to encourage," he said.
With reduced police presence at those locations, Melbourne officials say it will save taxpayers money. The cameras will be installed in the coming months and if you're caught running a red light it will cost you $158.
