Woman shook baby, caused brain injury, Brevard deputies say

MERRITT ISLAND, Fla. – A 20-year-old Merritt Island woman is accused of shaking an 11-week-old infant after becoming frustrated with the child when it would not eat or stop crying, according to Brevard County Sheriff's Office.

Local 6 news partner Florida Today reports deputies say they began investigating after Victoria Constance Bennett and her husband brought the unresponsive child to Cape Canaveral Hospital on Friday.

The child was transferred to Arnold Palmer Hospital in Orlando. Experts there determined the child suffered a traumatic brain injury resulting in seizures and partial paralysis, consistent with "shaken baby syndrome."

Bennett was arrested and booked on a charge of aggravated child abuse. She was released from the Brevard County Jail by the courts. No bond or additional release information has been provided.
