First marijuana college opens in Florida

Students take month-long course on medical marijuana

TAMPA, Fla. – Floridians won't vote on legalizing medical marijuana until November, but some "students" are already preparing for the industry's arrival.

Medical Marijuana Tampa hosts its first classes on Tuesday. The school is the first facility in Florida dedicated to medical marijuana education.

According to Jeremy Bufford, the school's founder, students will take a month-long course focused on the historical, legal, botanical and pharmacological aspects of medical marijuana.

"The opportunities for the medical marijuana industry in 2015 and beyond are life changing," Bufford told WTSP-TV. "Not just for the patients we're going to be assisting, but also the economic impact it will bring to the area."

Bufford and his first round of students are confident Floridians will vote "yes" in November. In a poll released Monday by Winter Springs-based Gravis Marketing, 57-percent of voters said they support legalizing medical marijuana in Florida.

If the amendment passes, Bufford says he will be ready to hire researchers, cultivators, botanists, lab technicians and security officers.
