Florida colleges move up in national rankings

University of Miami, University of Florida make top 50

ORLANDO, Fla. – Florida's universities moved up in the national rankings in an annual report of the best colleges in the country by U.S. News & World Report.

According to the new 2014 list, the University of Miami is the best school in Florida and the 47th best school in the country.

The University of Florida was only two spots behind Miami -- tied for 49th. UF was ranked 54th best in the country in the 2013 list.

Florida State University was the last remaining Florida school in the top 100, rising six spots to 91st.

Two central Florida schools -- the University of Central Florida and Florida Institute of Technology -- made the top 200. FIT was named the 167th best school while UCF tied for 170th with the University of South Florida.

Princeton edged out Harvard as the top university in the country, according to the list.

"Way more [Princeton] alumni give money to their school, which is a key indicator of how happy they are," said Brian Kelly, editor of U.S. News & World Report.

Yale, Columbia, Stanford and the University of Chicago rounded out the top five schools in the nation. Stanford and the University of Chicago tied for fifth.

Rollins College in Winter Park earned top honors in the South Regional Colleges section. Stetson University in DeLand ranked fifth in the same category.

U.S. News & World Report uses things like graduation rates, number of incoming students, freshmen retention and quality of faculty to create the annual lists.

"We literally have millions of data points," Kelly told CBS This Morning.
