GAINESVILLE, Fla. - Police say officers fatally shot a man who threatened them with a knife.

Gainesville police say 62-year-old Ghulam Yahya Mujtaba threatened to stab a man in a laundry mat at an apartment complex Sunday afternoon.

The man ran to his apartment and called police. When police arrived a few minutes later, they told Mujtaba to put the knife down. He refused, and started to approach the two officers.

The Gainesville Sun reports officers first shot Mujtaba with a Taser stun gun, but it didn't stop him.

Police spokeswoman Angelina Valuri says officers shot Mujtaba as he aggressively advanced toward them with the knife still in his hand.

The newspaper reports the apartment complex is owned by The Arc, which is an organization for people with mental disabilities.
