Man charged with battery on officer, fleeing, driving with suspended license

LEESBURG, Fla. - A man has been charged with aggravated battery on an officer and fleeing and eluding after deputies say he led authorities on a chase through Lake and Marion counties, starting with dragging a Leesburg officer with his vehicle--and it was all caught on video.

David Housmer, 35, was captured Monday in Marion County by deputies after Stop Sticks were used to halt the chase, causing the car to flip over and land on its roof on the side of the road.

Leesburg police said Housmer was driving on US 27 and was pulled over for not having his license plate in the proper area and having a brake light out. When they stopped Housmer, police said they realized his Georgia license was suspended and upon searching the vehicle, had a K-9 give a positive alert for drugs, according to the report. It's not clear if drugs were found in the vehicle.

When an officer placed his hand on the door, Housmer told him "don't do that" and slammed the vehicle into gear, according to the report. As the officer attempted to grab Housmer to keep him from driving away, police say Housmer pressed the gas pedal and dragged the officer with the vehicle. It's not clear how far the officer was dragged before freeing himself.

The chase then began through Lake County and an hour later, it continued into Marion County.

After Housmer lost control of the vehicle and crashed, deputies arrested Housmer, who complained of aches and pains and was taken to Leesburg Regional Medical Center. His female passenger was taken to Ocala Regional Medical Center under a trauma alert "due to the injuries sustained in the accident post-pursuit," according to Lake County reports.

Housmer was taken to Lake County jail upon being released from the hospital, where he is being held on $15,000 bond. It's not clear what his passenger's condition is.
