2 kids hit on West Orange Trail

Children airlifted after being hit on bike trail

APOPKA, Fla. – The Florida Highway Patrol is investigating an accident that injured two children Saturday afternoon.

Troopers said the two children whose ages are unknown, were crossing the West Orange Trail at McCormick Road near Apopka Vineland Road with their father.

According to FHP, 54-year-old Shirley Moore hit the two children while they were riding their bikes across the crosswalk with their father.

Krystal Kirby and her family saw the aftermath of the accident.

"There was just a little pink bike mangled under a car," said Kirby.

Kirby said biking along the trail with a busy road nearby isn't easy.

"It's hard with the bike trail so close to the road and I'm sure accidents are much more common here than if it were somewhere else," Kirby said.

FHP said the two 13-year-olds hit were not wearing their helmets when they biked across the crosswalk.

Both children were airlifted to Arnold Palmer Hospital with serious injuries, but are expected to survive, according to FHP.

FHP is still trying to figure out who had the right of way when the crash happened, so it's unclear at this time if the woman will be charged.

Troopers are continuing their investigation.
