OSCEOLA COUNTY, Fla. – An Osceola County man was arrested after deputies said a 2-year-old boy in his care had been "violently shaken."

Deputies began the investigation after the child was brought to Arnold Palmer Hospital in Orlando and doctors indicated he had "severe head and body injuries that were consistent with 'shaken baby system.'"

Sammy Pawnee was arrested and charged with aggravated child abuse causing great bodily harm after detectives interviewed him.

Pawnee, who detectives said was the last person with the child, told deputies that the boy had fallen off of a bed and that he shook the boy in an attempt to revive him. He also told them about three other incidents when the child might have fallen off of a chair, been struck by another child and injured himself in a bathroom.

Doctors told deputies that the boy needed brain surgery and that his injuries were consistent with being shaken rather than falling.

Pawnee was booked into Osceola County Jail.
