Police: Man gets stuck in chimney during burglary

Neighbors record rescue effort

NAPLES, Fla. - A would-be burglar doing his best Santa impression became the laughing stock of one Florida neighborhood when he got stuck in a chimney.

Naples police tell The Naples Daily News 25-year-old Richard Tyler Brandon was attempting to break into an unoccupied home early Wednesday. According to police, Brandon and a friend were looking to get cash after spending all of their money at a local bar.

Brandon's friend called police when the alleged burglar became stuck. As rescue teams worked to free Brandon, neighbors found out what was happening and started recording.

"This is the first time I've ever seen or heard of something like this," Battalion Chief Pete DiMaria told Naples station WBBH.

"I think this Santa was trying to remove things rather than bringing presents in," Mike Whitley, the homeowner, told WBBH. "He was going the wrong way."

It took rescuers about 90 minutes to free Brandon from the chimney. Both Brandon and his friend were booked into jail on burglary charges.
