Report: USPS wants to deliver more junk mail

USPS: Extra junk mail would generate billions of dollars

ORLANDO, Fla. – Mailboxes may be stuffed with more junk mail soon under a proposed plan by the United States Postal Service, according to a report.

The New York Times reports the USPS wants to attract more direct-mail advertising customers to generate revenue for the struggling agency.

The USPS would bring in more than $1 billion every year under the new plan, according to the report.

However, the plan would lead to more junk mail deliveries to millions of mailboxes across the country. According to the report, Americans received more than 84 billion pieces of junk mail in 2011.

Many cities are opposed to the Postal Service's plan because more junk mail means higher costs for recycling plants and landfills. According to The New York Times, many cities estimate it already costs $1 billion each year to collect junk mail and dispose of it.
