Supplement claims one pill a day protects skin from sun's UVA, UVB rays

Company says pills effective with protection equal to SPF 30 against both UVA and UVB rays

UVB, UVA, SPF. Do you think we will ever be rid of the alphabet soup of sun protection?

The makers of a new supplement called Sun Assure say it's possible and they say it only takes one pill a day.

With summer's rays as intense as ever sun protection should be on everyone's mind, but with one million people being diagnosed with melanoma every year, it's obvious the commitment to prevention is hit or miss.

"Honestly speaking usually I put on sunscreen. Today I was in a hurry to beat the heat and I forgot it," says one woman we asked.

But, what if you could pop a pill every day and know you're protecting yourself from the inside out?

Sun Assure promises to do just that.  The company says the pills are "all natural, safe and effective" with "protective properties" equal to an SPF 30 against both UVA and UVB rays.

The active ingredients include vitamins A, C, E and zinc antioxidants which the company says protects the skin from the inside out.

"Currently, we do not have FDA approved vitamins that can provide us with the appropriate sun protection factor so currently although research is promising we don't' have a standard pill or antioxidant supplement that can actually give us the protection we need," said Dr. Valencia Thomas, a dermatologist.

While she's encouraged by the emerging science, Thomas is concerned people would rely only on the pills instead of tried and true sunscreen.

Until such a product is approved by the FDA, Thomas recommends sunscreen with a minimum SPF of 30 and reapplication every 2 hours.

Sun Assure is only available online. A 30 day supply will cost you about $30.
