Tampa airport wins $194 million in state funds

Large expansion on the way

TAMPA, Fla. - Gov. Rick Scott says the state will give Tampa International Airport $194 million to help pay for the largest expansion since the airport's opening in 1971.

Scott was in Tampa on Wednesday to make the announcement, along with dozens of local officials, including Tampa Mayor Bob Buckhorn.

The money will be used for a new rental car center, transit stop and people mover.

Scott and other area leaders say the expansion is necessary to entice tourists, create jobs and draw businesses to the area.

Construction is expected to begin later this year and could be completed by 2017. Scott says the project will create about 7,100 jobs.
